The Personal Support Worker Program
Program Information
The Personal Support Worker Program is designed to give you the skills required to provide personal support services to clients of various needs and compliment the roles of those working in the fields of nursing, social work and professional health care providers.
You will be employed to provide services to:
- clients and their families in their homes
- clients in long-term care facilities, retirement homes, community programs, rehabilitation centers and hospitals
The program consists of a series of theory based courses which will provide the student with a solid knowledge base of their clientele's needs and practical experience to expose them to their various work environments.
Admission Requirements
- A Completed Medical Form prior to entering the clinical and/or community component;
- A current Standard First Aid & Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate prior to clinical and/or community experience.
- Applicants should have a Secondary School Diploma or qualify for mature student status with equivalent comprehension.
- Previous experience is not a requirement but is considered as a asset.
- Proficiency in the English language both oral and written, sufficient to communicate with members of the health care team, the client or resident, is essential.
- Individuals must possess good health, good grooming, dependability and empathy.
- Criminal Record Check
- TB Skin Test
- Up to date vaccinations
- Students participating in the practical experience may be required to meet the medical requirements of the staff at the facility and/or agency where the clinical experience takes place.
